Although most of the area in the Palo Alto Hills Neighborhood is southwest of Interstate 280, the area does include residential areas up to Foothills Expressway and commercial/industrial properties up to El Camino Real. The homes in this neighborhood tend to be larger, on larger lots, and newer than most of the homes in Palo Alto. The local schools are Nixon Elementary, Terman Middle School, and Gunn High School.
The Palo Alto Hills Neighborhood is part of Palo Alto in large part because of the city of Palo Alto's acquisition of Foothills Park in 1958. The park had to be connected to the rest of Palo Alto. The subsequent building of the Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club was the beginning of most of the development.
