Los Altos Hills has no commercial nor industrial zones. It is strictly residential. The only retail establishment in town is the book store on the campus of Foothill College. It does not have a post office, library, nor telephone exchange. Residents wanting to visit a library go to nearby county operated libraries in Los Altos or Cupertino. Mail delivery and telephone services are provided from Los Altos.
The town's zoning requires a minimum lot size of one acre, setbacks from the property boundary, and easements for public pathways. There can only be one primary dwelling per lot. There is no multifamily housing.
In 2013 Forbes ranked Los Altos Hills as the 2nd most expensive zip code in America with a median home price of $5.4 million.
