Although the Fremont area has a long history spanning back to 1797 when Mission San Jose was founded, Fremont was incorporated as a city in 1956, combining the five communities of Centerville, Niles, Irvington, Mission San Jose, and Warm Springs.
During the 1950s and 1960s Fremont became quite industrialized, attracting many companies including the General Motors Fremont Assembly plant in 1961. Production at the plant began in 1962 and continued until 1982. Portions of the plant were demolished but it was reopened as a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota (New United Motor Manufactureing, Inc - NUMMI) which operated from 1984 until 2010. In 2010 the plant reopened as the Tesla Factory, 100% owned by Tesla Motors.
High-tech employment boomed in the 1980s through the late 1990s. The Apple factory where the first Mac computer was manufactured was located in Fremont.
Fremont is the fourth largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area by population.
Major employers in the city are: 1) Tesla, 2) Fremont Unified School District, 3) Washington Hospital, 4) Western Digital, 5) Lam Research, 6) Boston Scientific/Target Therapeutics, Inc, 7) Seagate Magnetics, 8) Kaiser Permanente, 9) City of Fremont, 10) Thermo Fisher Scientific
