Colma was begun as a large cemetary, with many large memorials for deceased people entombed there, and is known as the "City Of Souls". The number of dead people there is about 1.5 million while there are less than 2,000 living. Colma is the smallest city in San Mateo County.
Colma's design standards have encouraged Spanish-Mediterranean styles, resulting in an attractive commercial center. Many residential streets have paving stones and ornamental street lamps.
Colma has a strong tax base resulting from two shopping centers, numerous car dealerships, and a cardroom. Cardroom taxes provide approximately one third of the towns income. Sales taxes provide approximately another third, with nearly half of the sales taxes coming from auto dealers and supplies.
