Mountain View is home to the headquarters of a number of high-technology companies: Google, Symantec, LinkedIn, Intuit, Synopsis, etc. It was the home of Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory, the first company to develop silicon semiconductor devices. The concentration of the US semiconductor industry in the area gave it the name Silicon Valley.
The 2010 census gives Mountain View's population as 74,066. It is listed by city-data as the 10th highest city in the United States for having the most people with advanced degrees.
The growth and fame of Google and other high tech companies has attracted many people to Mountain View leading to rapid increases in home prices.
