San Carlos City Council just passed an ordinance requiring all new home construction and any renovation requiring structural changes of 50%, to have all-electric utilities. The building codes will be reviewed by the California Building Standards Commission and California Energy Commission for approval.
Single-family homes will be permitted to have gas cooking appliances and fireplaces, however they must also have electric hookups. Restaurants and commercial kitchens serving the public are exempt from the codes.
Also following Silicon Valley trends, all new developments must have electric vehicle charging wiring.
Natural gas restrictions have previously been passed in Menlo Park, San Mateo, Redwood City, and Foster City.
