A few days ago, I was reading The Wall Street Journal’s Personal Journal. There was an article about why more parents are choosing schools that teach life skills and entrepreneurship instead of focusing only on traditional academics.
As I read it, I smiled.
It reminded me why I made a decision last year that I’m still proud of today.
Our JLee Realty building is over 5,000 square feet. As our company became more efficient, I realized we simply didn’t need all that space anymore. Instead of asking, “Who should I rent it to?” I found myself asking a different question:
“How can this building make a bigger difference?”
When Alpha School was looking for a Palo Alto location, the answer became clear.
Supporting education has always been close to my heart.
I grew up in Taiwan, earned my law degree there, and later came to the United States to pursue my MBA. Looking back, that decision changed my life. It taught me that learning doesn’t stop when you graduate. Sometimes one new opportunity, one new idea, or one bold decision can completely change your future.
That’s one reason I love Silicon Valley. People here are always learning, experimenting, and asking, “What’s next?”
Today, AI is changing the way we live and work. Instead of fearing it, I believe we should help our children learn how to use it wisely. If AI can handle routine tasks, then our children can spend more time developing creativity, critical thinking, communication, leadership, and entrepreneurship—the qualities that will always make us human.
That’s exactly why the Wall Street Journal article resonated with me.
Every time I drive by our building and see Alpha School preparing for the upcoming school year, I feel a little smile inside. What was once our office is becoming a place where young minds will dream bigger, think differently, and prepare for a future none of us can fully imagine.
After more than 40 years in real estate, I’ve learned that success isn’t measured only by the properties we buy or sell.
It’s measured by the lives we touch.
If one of our buildings can help inspire the next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders, then I believe that’s one of the best investments I’ve ever made.
I hope Alpha School becomes a pioneer in education, and years from now, I’ll be able to drive by that building and say, “I’m grateful we had the opportunity to be a small part of that story.”
