South San Francisco is in a broad basin formed by the San Bruno Mountains on the north and the Coast Range on the west. Most of the valley faces the San Francisco Bay and is sheltered from much of the fog common in neighboring areas by the mountains to the west.
Genentech and other biotech companies give the city the title of “Birthplace of Biotechnology”.

Home prices in South San Francisco hit a peak of about $750,000 in 2006. Like most similarly priced areas they dropped strongly during the 2008 downturn and climbed to levels slightly higher by 2015 than were reached in the 2006 peak.
