In 1878 The Pacific Land Investment Company purchased land belonging to the Washington Township of Alameda County and subdivided to create the town of Newark. There were fewer than 100 residents. Newark was incorporated in 1955.

Wedgewood manufactured stoves in Newark from 1910’s to the 1940s. Peterbilt manufactured trucks from the early 1960s until the mid 1980s. In 1956 Trailmobile moved its manufacturing from Berkeley to Newark, but in 1975 moved to Charleston Illinois. The Newark Sun Microsystems site was purchased by BioMed Realty Trust and is now known as the Pacific Research Center.
