The Millbrae economy is dominated by its long strips of hotels. Millbrae’s close proximity to the SFO airport, closeness to San Francisco, and its transit center that can get people to all major cites and events in the Bay Area, make it a popular place for tourists to stay.

Darius Ogden Mills purchased land in the 1860s to build a country estate. The estate became known as “Millbrae”, derived from “Mills” and the Scottish word for rolling hills “Brae”. A more than decade long desire to keep the Mills’ estate for residential use spurred residents to incorporate as the city of Millbrae in 1948.
