Ralston purchased much of the land in 1856. Ralston transfered 1,043 acres to Anson Burlingame in 1866. In 1868 Ralston named the settlement after his friend Burlingame. However Anson Burlingame died in 1870 and the land reverted to Ralston. Ralston died in 1870 and the land was transferred to his partner William Sharon. Sharon died in 1885 and the land was transfered to his son-in-law Francis Newlands. Newlands had a vision to build estates surrounding a country club similar to his creation in Chevy Chase, Md. The Burlingame Country Club was organized in 1893. After the 1906 earthquake many people fled the ruins in San Francisco and bought lots in Burlingame. Burlingame was incorporated in 1908.<\/p>\n
