By mid-century there were a dozen mills in the Woodside area producing lumber for San Francisco. The current redwoods are 3rd generation. The first generation were used to produce lumber for the first homes in San Francisco. The second growth was used to rebuild homes destroyed by the 1906 earthquake. Woodside was incorporated in 1956 to prevent urbanization.

The intentionally small business district is limited to a few restaurants, a grocery store, a saloon, a hardware and tack store, and a few others. There are only a few businesses outside of the business district, perhaps the most well known being Buck’s of Woodside restaurant.
