Pacifica runs along a six mile stretch of beaches and hills. The city includes several small valleys between Sweeney Ridge to the east, Montara Mountain to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Pacifica was incorporated in 1957, combining nine previously separate, unincorporated communities.

Although the Sanchez Adobe, located in Pacifica, is the oldest structure in San Mateo County, Pacifica is probably better known as a surfing destination.

Major employers in the city are: 1) Pacifica School District, 2) City of Pacifica, 3) Safeway, 4) Jefferson Union High School District, 5) Lucky (Save Mart Supermarkets), 6) Recology of the Coast, 7) Rite Aid, 8) Ross Dress for Less, 9) North Coast County Water District
