The town of Hillsborough is zoned to have a minimum house size of 2,500 square feet and a minimum lot size of 0.5 acres. There are no apartments, condominiums, nor townhouses. Also the town has no commercial zoning, and thus no businesses. Four public schools, three private schools, a golf course, a small park, and government facilities are the only non-residential properties. Hillsborough was incorporated in 1910.
Hillsborough has winding hilly topography with many lots having steep slopes. Although Hillsborough has highly ranked public elementary and middle schools, it does not have a public high school.
