Wealthy art patrons Delight and Garfield Merner of Hillsborough bought 3.5 acres of land at the edge of Menlo Park in 1928 to create a center for craft production, inspired by European craft guilds they had seen in Europe. Ansel Adams took the first interior and exterior photographs shortly after the buildings were completed. The Allied Arts Guild website has more information.
Downtown Menlo Park is centered around Santa Cruz Ave at El Camino Real. Santa Cruz Ave has many restaurants and small shops. It is very pleasant to walk around. The Caltrain station is across El Camino Real, close to Alma Street.
