Egan Intermediate School

100 West Portola Ave.

Los Altos, CA 94022

Egan Intermediate School is one of two intermediate schools in the Los Altos School District. Located in the northern portion of the City, it is the larger of the two 7-8 grade schools. The student population is predominantly white and Asian.

Egan School was selected as a California Distinguished School in 1988, with the review team praising the high caliber of instruction and teacher preparation. Egan is now designated as a Sustained Distinguished School. The goals for Egan Intermediate School are described in the local School Plan, developed by the Egan Site Council, which consists of staff, student, parent and community members.

Students' Needs:

One of Egan's goals is to meet the unique learning and social needs of each student. A school counselor/psychologist is available to meet with parents, staff, and students. When requested, the counselor/psychologist tests students to determine appropriate learning levels and then meets with parents to explain the results. The counselor/psychologist takes part in all of the Individual Education Plans and facilitates the Community Health Awareness Council (CHAC) counselor's schedules. CHAC provides additional afterschool counseling services through this community agency.

Through the Health Guidance classes, students are provided with educational tools needed for strong refusal skills and conflict resolution. Funding is used to provide supplemental materials that provide information and enhances self-esteem in adolescents.

Special education services are available to all eligible students in the district. Service includes small group instruction from learning disability specialists.

Egan School supports students with academic needs by offering a seventh and eighth grade guided study hall and afterschool tutoring. Half way through each quarter, students who are doing poorly are required to attend an afterschool homework club.

Services for children with limited English proficiency are available at Egan. Students remain in the program, receiving instruction in Limited English Proficiency and other academic needs, until their academic skills and English vocabulary are adequate for them to be successful in the regular program.

Services for children identified as Gifted and Talented are provided with opportunities in the regular classroom program, through math placement, and by providing additional lunch time or after school classes during the year.

Egan's Scores on California Standardized Tests

  Reading Math Language Spelling
7th Grade 99 99 99 98
8th Grade 98 98 99 98

Scores range from 1-99. A score of 99 indicates that the school scored higher than 99 percent of the other public schools in California. All scores are from "McCormack's Guides '99."

Learning Environment:

It is a goal of the Los Altos School district to maintain class sizes at a level that is conductive to an optimum learning experience for students.

All of Egan's teachers are assigned to subject areas within the scope of their teaching credentials.

New teachers receive additional support from the principal, a mentor teacher assigned to new teachers, and grade level peers.

The Egan principal monitors effective classroom instructional practices through classroom observation and evaluation. Teachers are expected to meet both individual goals and district standards for effective teaching. Tenured teachers are evaluated formally every two years, and first and second year teachers are evaluated every year.
