Daly City is the largest city in San Mateo County. The area had been mostly dairy farms prior to 1906, but the earthquake caused many refugees to seek temporary living space in the area. John Daly eventually subdivided his land creating several housing tracts. Fear of annexation by San Francisco and being ignored by San Mateo County started a drive to incorporate. In 1911 the town was incorporated. Daly City remained relatively small until the late 1940s when Henry Doelger created a major district of houses and businesses called Westlake.
Roughly 46% of the jobs in Daly City are service jobs and 30% are retail jobs. Healthcare is one of the major industries.
Major employers in the city are: 1) Seton Mecical Center, 2) Jefferson Elementary School District, 3) City of Daly City, 4) Jefferson High School District, 5) Genesys Telecommunications Laboratory, 6) Cow Palace, 7) St. Francis Convalescent Pavilion, 8) Target Stores, 9) Pacific Gas & Electric, 10) Macy's
