Requesting Paperwork Early Is the Key

        Requesting a copy of the closing documents at the beginning of the process is key to understanding the fine print at the end.

       These are some of the documents you'll encounter at the close. Ask your mortgage lender and real estate agent for copies early on.

• Loan papers
• Title documents
• HUD-1 settlement statement
• Truth-in-lending statement
• Flood certification
• Closing costs or buyer's instructions that itemize costs
• Mortgage or deed of trust
• Certificate of occupancy (if you're purchasing a newly constructed house)
