The Newark City planning commission voted unanimously on May 13 to approve a mixed-use development including nearly 1,000 condominiums and apartments to be built near the Union City BART station. The City Council will review the project on June 8.
The project was proposed by Integral Communities who has also proposed a project to build 200+ homes in Newark.
The Union City project proposes 974 apartments, condominiums, and townhome-style condominiums. 146 of the units would be below market-rate apartments. The project will also include 30,800 sq.ft. of commercial space. A total of 33 residential buildings (3-5 stories tall) and a community building are planned. The project will require some zoning changes to allow it to be built on what was previously mostly industrial plots.
The project will be located on 26.5 acres south of Decoto Rd, west of 7th St, north of Bradford Way, and east of the Union Pacific Railroad lines.
